Seattle drivers say they’ll avoid I-90 bridge

Friday, March 28, 2014by  Jon Osterberg

Will I-90 commuters really avoid the bridge? Or are they just bluffing?
The latest PEMCO Poll reveals that 58% of Seattle-area drivers said they’ll use the Lake Washington Floating Bridge less often if an I-90 toll comparable to the one already collected on SR 520 toll becomes reality. And 37% say that, specifically, they’ll drive north or south around Lake Washington to avoid a toll, presumably clogging SR 522 (Lake City Way), I-405, and Rainier Avenue.
But are some of those drivers bluffing? PEMCO polled on this topic before concerning SR 520. In 2010, 62% of drivers said they planned to use 520 less often. But when we polled again in 2012, about one year after the toll went into effect, only 38% said they use 520 less than before.
