One in five teens drove, drank on prom night

Friday, April 18, 2014by  Jon Osterberg

Did you drink the night of your high school prom? Nineteen percent of Northwest drivers say they did.
The latest PEMCO Poll, conducted by FBK Research of Seattle, also revealed that 79% drove themselves to prom, or rode with peers. And though just one in five say they drank, 34% say they attended a party where alcohol was served.
Motorists should be concerned because teen drivers already are more distracted than adults, and statistics show that distractions and crashes increase with each additional teen passenger who rides in the car. Drinking compounds that problem.
Twenty percent of those polled say parents should allow their kids to drink as long as it’s chaperoned and there’s no driving. Of course, of the parents who were polled, fewer share that opinion.
