NW Poll: What does it take to be considered a Pacific Northwest local?

What makes someone a Pacific Northwest local? Is it where you live, how long you've lived here, or whether you own three rain jackets and refuse to carry an umbrella? According to the latest PEMCO Northwest Poll, most residents believe becoming a local takes more than simply having a Pacific Northwest address. 

The survey found that two-thirds (66%) of residents consider themselves Pacific Northwest locals. But earning that title appears to take time. More than three-quarters (78%) say a person needs to live in the region for at least half their life before they're considered a local, including 22% who believe you must spend your entire life here. 

While time matters, respondents also pointed to the attitudes and lifestyle that define the region. When asked which characteristics best describe a typical Pacific Northwesterner, respondents most often chose a love of outdoor recreation (77%), dressing casually or in outdoor apparel (76%) and supporting local sports teams (73%). 

Interestingly, while outdoor recreation topped the list of defining traits, fewer residents say they actually spend time outdoors that often. Just over half (52%) report recreating outdoors several times a week or more, suggesting many identify with the region's outdoor culture even if they aren't hitting the trails every weekend. 

The poll also found that preparedness is part of the Pacific Northwest identity. Nearly nine in 10 residents (89%) say they follow rain and snow driving precautions, while 82% take steps to prevent wildfires. Among those who hike, 68% always check trail conditions, weather or wildlife information before heading out, and 76% pay attention to trailhead safety information. 

Despite the long-running "Seattle Freeze" stereotype, respondents largely rejected the idea that Pacific Northwesterners are unwelcoming. Just 27% say being cold to newcomers accurately describes a typical resident, making it the least representative characteristic included in the survey.
