Redmond Derby Days Poker Race: Along for the Ride

Monday, July 12, 2010by  WALLY Team

Body-contoured spandex must be the bane of card cheats everywhere — riders at the Redmond Derby Days couldn't even find room to hide an ace up their sleeves.

Peter, Danielle and I made tracks Friday to Redmond to celebrate the 70th year of the Redmond Derby Days summer festival. The annual biking event sends NW Male & Female Action Figures 22.5 miles south along the shores of Lake Sammamish, where they must each gather five playing cards before showing their hands at the Redmond City Hall Campus. Post-race, the riders helped kick off the Derby Days festival by grooving to live music, taking in an outdoor movie and enjoying Northwest refreshments.

So how do you know you're a NW Male Action Figure? "It's the bugs in the teeth," according to Cleate Roberts from Redmond, who rode together with his wife, Mary. "That makes 20 miles in 20 years for us," he firmly stated. Cleate was dealt a flush during the race and finished with $75 in his pocket. Way to beat the house, Cleate!
