Our Northwest

A beginner’s guide to StashFest

Note: Our WALLY event team is looking forward to attending the opening day of StashFest, a two-day sale of unique fabrics for quilting, fashion, and home décor! We asked StashFest coordinator and presenter Patricia Belyea to write a guest blog post for us, to share what she looks forward to most for the annual event.

StashFest has always inspired Northwest quilters and textiles aficionados with one-of-a-kind fabrics and designer wearables. The two-day event, popping up this weekend in the waterfront town of La Conner, raises funds for La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum.

At the top on my list of favorite things at StashFest ranks the fabulous fabrics. Artisans and micro textiles companies share their handmade and vintage wares. The lineup of presenters this year includes:

  • Ann Darling — eclectic global fabrics and designer clothing

  • Ako Shimozato — Japanese textile reinvented

  • Suzanna Leigh — hand-painted and dyed silks

  • Peggy Juve — digitally printed artist fabrics and clothing

  • The CQA Collection — collectors’ choice fabrics

  • Annie Lewis — hand silk-screened new and upcycled fabrics

  • Melanie Hopkins — hand-dyed Kona cottons

  • Patricia Belyea — vintage Japanese yukata cottons

Next comes the people. The attendees, fondly known as StashFesters, love to make stuff. Their curiosity and excitement about all things fabric generates a magical energy throughout the event.

Last on my list is the MuseumLa Conner Quilt & Textile Museum, one of 21 quilt museums across the nation, displays three floors of exhibits in the historic Gaches Mansion. Showing quilts in a museum validates this iconic American art form that was once deemed a common domestic craft.
